What We Do
The mission of the York Junior Symphony Orchestra is to provide the finest quality orchestral training and performance opportunities for the youngest music students in our York County community. Recognizing that there was a need for an orchestra for young children, the York Junior Symphony Orchestra (YJSO) was established in 1967. The YJSO program is designed for musicians in grades 5 through 8 and affords serious students the opportunity to play with an accomplished orchestra, while developing their music skills.
The orchestra consists of approximately 100 players and is comprised of full string, woodwind, brass and percussion sections. Individuals must audition for membership and are accepted based on their musical ability, without regard to sex, race, religion, disability, or national origin. Auditions for a new year are held in August and rehearsals begin immediately thereafter, and continue two to four times a month during the school year. The orchestra performs at least two public concerts annually, in the fall and spring. Occasionally, special performances for competition and demonstration are added to the group’s itinerary.
It is the expressed belief of the Board of Directors and music educators that the opportunity to participate in the YJSO requires a serious commitment on the part of the young musicians and their families. Cooperation with the guidelines set forth in this handbook will help to achieve a rewarding experience for all the members of the YJSO.
The York Junior Symphony Orchestra programs are developed and enhanced on a continuing basis. We are always gratified when we see our young musicians grow into polished professionals. We are equally proud to have had a part in shaping tomorrow’s educated classical music audience.
The mission of the York Junior Symphony Orchestra, Inc, a non-profit 501(C) (3) organization, shall be to provide moral, financial, artistic, and inspirational support to the York Junior Symphony Orchestra thereby creating a symphonic musical environment among young musicians of various cultural backgrounds from York County and its surrounding communities. The YJSO includes students primarily in grades 5 through 8. The YJSO, Inc. collaborates with other organizations when appropriate.
The Vision Statement of the YJSO provides the finest quality orchestral training and performing opportunities for the youngest music students in our York County community. The YJSO has designed a program for musicians in grades 5 through 8 to afford serious music students exposure to classical music through participation in an accomplished orchestra with their peers. Through the orchestra, members gain valuable skills in cooperation, discipline and tolerance as well as enhancement of each member's confidence, personal growth, and social skills. Finally, YJSO looks to partner with educators, parents, and other community members to increase the exposure of the performing arts in York County
