8th Graders Interested in Auditioning for York YOUTH Symphony Orchestra (YYSO)

The YJSO is for young musicians in grades 5-8 and is designed to challenge students at a level above their school based program. Although all 8th grade students are encouraged to be leaders for the YJSO, occasionally a very advanced student may benefit from a higher challenge than the YJSO can provide. In these rare instances, the YJSO and YYSO work together to properly place the musician based on a number of factors including musical ability, maturity, and leadership potential.

The YYSO is typically composed of high school and college freshman players. The musical repertoire and concert/rehearsal schedules are highly demanding. You can find out more information at www.yorkyouthsymphony.org.

Any 8th grade student who finds themselves in this situation and would like to audition for the YYSO MUST follow the appropriate protocol to be considered:

Complete the following steps, Students who do not follow all parts pertaining to this policy will be disqualified from membership in YYSO:

  • Print the 8th grade recommendation form and fill out part A

  • Take the form to your private teacher and ask them to fill out part B

  • Scan and email the completed form to yjsoboard@gmail.com

  • Register for YJSO at www.yjso.org AND for YYSO at www.yorkyouthsymphony.org

    • NON-violin players: only signup for a time on the YYSO sign-up site. You only need to do one audition but be prepared to complete all audition components for both during that time.

    • Violin players: MUST sign up for two separate auditions, one for YJSO and one for YYSO. Be sure to sign up on BOTH signup sheets!

  • You will be informed when you are approved or not approved to audition for YYSO

Please note that the final decision on placement is at the discretion of the YJSO and YYSO directors.
